BIOGRAPHY

Jongsung OH was born in 1987 in Seoul, South Korea. From 2011 to 2018, he studied under Uzong CHOE at Seoul National University. Between 2014 and 2016, he served in the Korea Army Band. He completed his Master’s degree in composition at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar in 2024, where he studied with Michael Obst, Ulrich Kreppein, and Sven Daigger. Since the winter semester of 2024, he has been studying electronic music with Michael Beil at the Cologne University of Music and Dance.

  

He participated in masterclasses with Peter Eötvös, Unsuk Chin, York Höller, Magnus Lindberg, Stefano Gervasoni, and Michael Jarrell.

   

In 2019, he won the 1st Prize at the 7th Molinari Quartet International Composition Competition in Montréal, Canada. In 2021, he received the Grand Prize at the “4th Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition for Young Composers.” Additionally, he was awarded the 2nd Prize at the “22nd International Composition Competition as part of the Weimar Spring Festival of Contemporary Music 2021.” In 2022, he won the “Thuringian Composition Prize” and was selected scholarship as a composer of the Peter Eötvös Foundation.

   

In the second half of 2025, he was selected as a composer-in-residence at Herrenhaus Edenkoben and commissioned to compose an ensemble work for IEMA, which is scheduled to premiere in September.

   

His works have been commissioned and performed at various festivals worldwide, including the “Liszt Biennale” (DE), the “Krakow Composer Festival” (PL), the “Impérial Annecy Festival” (FR), the “Symphony Festival” (KR), “Spotlight on Composers” (HU), the “Weimar Spring Festival of Contemporary Music” (DE), and the “Tongyeong International Music Festival” (KR). His music was also performed at the Great Hall of the Musikverein during a concert celebrating the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Austria.

   

He has collaborated with various renowned orchestras, ensembles, and musicians worldwide, including Peter Barsony(HU), Wu Wei (CN), Odile Auboin (FR), Emilien Courait (FR), Molinari Quartet (CA), Ars Nova Ensemble (FR), Danubia Orchestra (HU), Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej (PL), Via Nova Ensemble (DE), TIMF Ensemble (KR), oNSET Ensemble (US), MDR Orchestra (DE), Savaria Symphonieorchester(HU), Austrian-Korean Philharmonic (AT/KR), Thuringian Philharmonic (DE), Korean National Symphony Orchestra (KR), and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (KR).
